SUMMARY

The Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant will coordinate and perform tasks and activities in all areas of the clinical laboratory.   
 
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Draws blood samples from patients.
  2. Assures proper identification and handling of specimens for analysis.
  3. Organizes and maintains adequate supply levels.
  4. Assists in the training of new employees.
  5. Operates laboratory information systems.
  6. Performs waived testing.
  7. Prepares specimens and requisitions for outgoing lab samples.
  8. Cleans and sanitizes lab equipment and all areas within the lab.
  9. Maintains orders for blood draws when received are routed in order of priority and arranges for critical specimen handling and transportation arrangements when needed.
  10. Follows all laboratory safety rules and reports any possible hazards to the Director.
  11. Refers to appropriate policy and procedure manuals as necessary and communicates with reference labs for proper specimen requirements.
  12. Performs and documents QC results as required.
  13. Maintains temperature logs.
  14. Processes all laboratory test requisitions and specimens quickly, efficiently, and appropriately.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Responsible for attending staff meetings as evidenced by 70% attendance to ensure that necessary information is received.
  2. Adheres to the dress code, attendance, and all other company policies and procedures.
  3. Cross train and work in clinics as needed.
  4. Performs any other duties that may be assigned by the Director.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills are required.  This is normally acquired through a high school diploma or equivalent.  
  2. Good verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.
  3. Experience as a phlebotomist preferred; Phlebotomy certification required.
  4. CPR or BLS certification.
  5. Can perform/ or be willing to learn to do X-rays

WORKING CONDITIONS

  1. May be exposed to the risk of communicable diseases and radiation; May require the handling of unclean or infectious materials.
  2. Normally works in a well-lighted, well-ventilated area.
  3. Must be able to work under the stress and conditions that normally exist in a clinic setting.
  4. Classification Category 1 – Tasks involving blood, bodily fluids, or tissues exposure.
