Position Summary:

Hale County Hospital seeks a dynamic, dedicated leader with a passion for teaching and mentoring students at all stages of their educational journeys, building relationships with and supporting our vulnerable neighbors, positively impacting hospital operations and contributing to strategic initiatives, and strengthening rural communities and community health.

The Director of Experiential Learning, will help lead the innovative new Hale County Hospital Fellows program (https://www.halecountyhospital.com/gap-year) for top recent college graduates from across the country.  They will provide teaching, mentorship, training, and support to Fellows during the year-long service and leadership development program and will play a key role in expanding experiential educational opportunities at the hospital for high school, undergraduate, graduate, medical, allied health, and nursing students.


Key Responsibilities:

Lead the Hale County Hospital Fellowship Program

  • Supervise and mentor Hale County Hospital Fellows, providing guidance, teaching, mentorship, team building, and support in their development as community health and citizen service leaders.
  • Support, teach, and mentor Fellows as they:
    • Volunteer in the Hale County Hospital “Health Partners” program -- an innovative relational support and transitions-of-care initiative for our vulnerable neighbors.
    • Lead and teach in a healthcare career pipeline program for high school students
    • Assist with and contribute to hospital operations and strategic initiatives
    • Strengthen hospital-community connections through outreach, education, engagement, and communications efforts.
  • Conduct daily morning meetings with Fellows to review agendas, address issues, teach, monitor progress, and ensure alignment with hospital goals.
  • Provide one-on-one teaching and mentoring to Fellows, help lead team teaching and mentoring sessions, and help with weekly reading and discussion series on social determinants of health, community health, community engagement, leadership and management, health systems, and health policy.

Expand Education and Training Opportunities for Other (non-Fellow) Students

  • Lead expansion of training and mentorship programs for undergraduate, graduate, medical, nursing, and allied health students.
  • Assist with coordinating and supporting student rotations, ensuring a structured and valuable educational experience across various hospital departments.
  • Teach and facilitate learning opportunities focused on community health, rural community hospitals, hospital administration, social determinants of health, teaching and mentoring of high school students, and community-based healthcare models.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Strong background in teaching, mentoring, or student supervision.
  • Ability to foster leadership and professional growth in early-career learners.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, leadership, management, and communication skills.
  • Experience in volunteer service to others and in community-based initiatives, with a demonstrated commitment to volunteerism, serving others, and strengthening local communities.
  • Passion for rural healthcare, social determinants, education, and mentorship.
  • Experience in community health, rural healthcare, or hospital operations preferred but not required.
  • A Master’s Degree in healthcare, public health, education, social work, or a related field is welcomed but not required.
